Food of Cambodia

Since poultry is widely available in the states, my parents and I opt for mostly fresh fish dishes that are not farm raised. Our decision was also base upon the BIRD FLU scare that was still going on in Cambodia at the time of our visit (Summer 2006). I was introduce to so many types of fishes in my country that I can’t even remember them all!

Sit back, relax and enjoy the video I made featuring lots of authentic Cambodian dishes.

If you enjoy my video please rate, subcribe and
most definitely let me know how I’m doing. Thanks!

i never had or heard of mangosteen before going to srok khmer. man i miss eating all the fruit. we chilled them and ate them ice cold, durian, jack fruit.

  • Thanks for your recent comment on my blog on my Cambodian food adventure. I’d like to make another trip soon to seek out more authentic Cambodian here in the LA area. Can you recommend a place I should go and any particular dishes I should have? If you’d like to join me, that would be great, too. It would be instructive–and fun–to have someone to guide my choices and tell me what makes those particular items authentic and how they remind you of home.

Thanks for any help you might give me, Carol

hi, are you a cambodian? do you read khmer?

  • Mary

Hi Khatiya, I was just reading the posts above and wow. Not many young Cambodians know how to read and write Khmer fluently and neither do I. You seem like a well-rounded intelligent woman, and I am curious, how old are you?
In today’s society, younger Cambodian-Americans are forgetting their culture and the ability to understand and grasp their customs. People like you are what seem like a “urban legend”.
Please keep up the good work. Even though I don’t speak or write Khmer (hopefully I will though), at least I possess the knowledge and palette to cook Khmer food.

    • Mary,
Thank you very much for your compliment. I grew up in a family where my Father restrict us kids from speaking English inside the house. Perhaps it’s because he wants to know what we are talking about too? :) It was a great decision by him as we is aware that we reside in the US already and so there’s plenty of opportunity for us to learn the English language but if we don’t reserve the Khmer way of speaking, reading and writing, we can totally loose it.

As for my age, I’m an old maid LOL. I was born the year of the Monkey (1980) in the camp.

Hey Khatiya, your Khmer language is very impressive. How did you learn the language fluently, eps writing? Do you read Khmer books a lot?

    • Chamnan,
My father used to take me to learn Khmer reading and writing when I was in grade school. My brother and sisters also went along and we study about 2 hours each weekday after our normal English classes.

Now I tried to keep my reading and writing skill current by reading Karaoke, writing song lyrics and blogging. I don’t think my Khmer is that good but enough to carry a conversation in Khmer. Thanks for stopping by.
